Earl E. ‘Gene’ Burkholder

Longtime Ridgecrest resident, Earl Eugene “Gene” Burkholder, passed away in Lancaster on March 12, 2019, due to an accident.

He is survived by his two sisters, Vivian Hendon of Conway, Ark., and Evelyn Blume of Greenbrier, Ark. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a funeral service at the H.K. Holland Memorial Chapel in Ridgecrest on Friday, March 29, at 10 a.m., followed by full military honors at the graveside.

Earl Burkholder, or Gene, as family and friends knew him, was born Nov. 22, 1923, to Russell and Muriel Burkholder of Sterling, Colo. He joined the U.S. Navy on April 28, 1943. He spent most of his time while in the Navy on USS Sabine in the Pacific Ocean.

After World War II, he came to the Naval Ordnance Test Station at China Lake in 1948 and retired from the Naval Weapons Center at China Lake in 1979. He served his country admirably.

In lieu of flowers, donations to any veterans’ association would be appreciated.
