June E. Martin

June E. MartinJune Evelyn Martin passed away peacefully, from heart failure, in her Ridgecrest, home on April 25, 2019, at the age of 73.

Visitation and Rosary were held May 2 at the H.K. Holland Memorial Chapel. A funeral mass will be celebrated today, May 3, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. A reception in Monsignor Cleary Hall will follow interment at Desert Memorial Park.

Mrs. Martin was born June Evelyn Ohleyer on Nov. 28, 1945, in Paterson, N.J. At age 5, June, her father George, mother Margaret and brother George moved to Mesa, Ariz.

June’s education began in Mesa followed by high school at the Catholic Academy in San Luis Rey Mission in Oceanside, and finally the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, where she majored in theology and history.

Upon graduation, June became a Catholic nun and taught Catholic school in Phoenix, Ariz. After a number of years, June realized her heart was not fulfilled. She said she wasn’t living her life “with gusto,” so, in the early 1970s, she left the convent and followed her brother George, a China Lake physicist, to Ridgecrest. Once settled, June began teaching at St. Ann Catholic School and continued her professional career, after a break to raise her two children, teaching at Faller Elementary, Murray Junior High and finally returning to St. Ann, where she retired after 30-plus years.

Outside the classroom, June enjoyed camping and fishing, watching her boys play sports, cooking Martin family grits, art (photography and painting), learning about world history and watching Jeopardy. June was unwavering in her faith in God and the Catholic Church. She was a lifelong supporter of St. Ann’s Parish where she stayed actively involved in volunteering and teaching at the school. Her passion for God as a “Lady of Prayer” has lit hearts on fire and she was always sure to include Him in her daily life. Be it through prayer, daily Rosary and meditation, Adoration, Mass and communal giving, June made God her cornerstone and truly walked in Jesus’ steps.

June leaves behind her husband, Richard (Duke); sons Richard and Thomas; daughters-in-law Rebekah and Sarah; and five beloved grandchildren, Taylor, Elizabeth, Ashley, RJ and little Sawyer.

Although hearts have been saddened by her passing, there is comfort in knowing she will forever stay present in our prayers and we will see her again.
