To the Editor: Gem-O-Rama canceled

On Aug. 6, Searles Valley Minerals notified the Searles Lake Gem & Mineral Society that the strong earthquakes on July 4-5 damaged facilities to such an extent that SVM will not be able to host any Gem-O-Rama gem show activities on its properties during this year’s gem show.

The SVM exclusion includes all access to Searles Lake to collect saline minerals, including Searles Lake pink halite, and all tours through the manufacturing facilities. Because these activities form the backbone of the Gem-O-Rama, we believe that we must cancel the 2019 Gem-O-Rama in Trona.

The Gem & Mineral Society has sponsored a show for mineral collectors and the public each year since the inaugural show in 1941. This show features opportunities to collect rare and beautiful minerals and to experience displays and exhibits, field trips and entertainment for the entire family. This is a tradition the society intends to continue.

Restoration of mineral production is under way, and repairs are ongoing throughout the community. Because of the demands of this recovery activity, Searles Valley Minerals, Inc., is not allowing access to its property on Searles Lake. We look forward to hosting the popular Gem-O-Rama next year.
