While friends and family had already begun publicly grieving following the death of Kathryn Dawn “Katie” Pham on May 18, authorities officially identified the 21-year-old suspected murder victim on Tuesday, May 25.

Members of the community gathered at a candlelight vigil in Petroglyph Park Thursday evening to honor Pham’s memory. See next week’s edition for more information.

Kern County Sheriff deputies arrested 20-year-old suspect Daniel Gunnarsson the same day they discovered the deceased in her home just outside Ridgecrest city limits. Pham and the suspect were classmates and both graduated from Burroughs High School in 2018. The suspect faces felony charges of first-degree murder and mutilation of the remains.

Gunnarsson reportedly did not attend his felony arraignment on May 20 where his public defender entered a plea of not guilty. His pre-preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 18 in Ridgecrest. The suspect is being held without bail.
