AM Legion hosts 52nd Memorial Day service

The American Legion Post 684 hosts Ridgecrest’s Memorial Day Ceremony every year at the Desert Memorial Park at 10 AM.

Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2024 will occur on Monday, May 27.

Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.

The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries.

By the late 1860s, a tradition had begun to take shape. Americans in various towns and cities started holding springtime tributes to the countless fallen soldiers, a practice that would evolve into the Memorial Day we know today. They decorated their graves with flowers, a symbol of remembrance, and recited prayers, a solemn tribute to their sacrifice.

Many Americans today observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of summer.
