Bicyclist killed in traffic collision

Ridgecrest Police Department (RPD)Sgt. Lloyd– Last Friday evening, August 11, 2023, at approximately 10:15 PM, RPD was dispatched to a hit-and-run traffic collision in the 100 block of East Ridgecrest Boulevard.

Upon their arrival at the scene, officers discovered an unconscious 48-year male lying in the roadway beside his electric bicycle. The officers initiated immediate life-saving measures. Additional assistance arrived soon after from Liberty Ambulance and Kern County Fire, yet despite all efforts, the individual succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The RPD’s specialized traffic unit promptly took charge of the situation, launching a thorough investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that the individual was not struck by a secondary vehicle; instead, it appears that he collided with the central median, leading to forceful contact with the roadway surface. It has been determined that the individual was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Additionally, there are suspicions that the individual may have been under the influence of intoxicating substances.

In accordance with established protocols, personnel from the Kern County Coroner’s Office were summoned to the scene to oversee the proper handling and transportation of the deceased to Bakersfield, CA, for further examination.
