Sequoia National Forest & Giant Sequoia National Monument Alicia Embrey–
On the evening of Saturday, May 27, 2023, California Highway Patrol and Caltrans issued an emergency closure warning due to cracks discovered in the westbound lane of Highway 178 near mile marker 21.
There is no estimated date for Highway 178’s reopening.
According to CHP, the recommended detour from Bakersfield to Lake Isabella is Highway 58 to Highway 14 to Highway 178.
Caltrans District 6 reported the following Saturday evening:
Kern Canyon/Lake Isabella: State Route 178
EMERGENCY CLOSURE due to cracks in the roadway near the waterway at the mouth of the canyon. The closure of 178 is in addition to SR 155 closure due to previous winter weather.
