According to IWV Water District General Manager Don Zdeba, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) aqueduct operations staff plans to begin releases from the aqueduct into the Indian Wells Valley basin on Wednesday at very low levels.
There will initially be three release locations; Freeman Sluice Gate, about five cubic feet per second (cfs), Sage Canyon Sand Trap (about two cfs), and Bird Canyon Sand Trap (about two cfs). They plan to have biologists on site to observe the startup of the releases to make sure desert tortoises are protected. Planned releases could continue into summer, perhaps as late as August. (2cfs is about 900 gallons per minute (gpm). Five cfs is about 2,250 gpm)
