M. David Mullen III – Two-Time Emmy Award Winner

By Bruce Auld News Review Correspondent

Brett Battles and M. David Mullen III were members of the Burroughs Class of 1980. David’s family left for an assignment in Virginia in 1978, thus not a Burroughs graduate, yet deserving of recognition. More than a year ago, The News-Review published their combined profiles.

Brett is a best-selling novelist. David is a cinematographer. I was recently privileged to make a presentation on Burroughs’s notable programs and graduates at the Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert. During the Q&A, I was informed that David had earned a second Emmy.

A Google search confirmed his second win. The investigation also revealed that David was nominated four times for “Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, winning the Emmy in 2019 and 2022. Recently, David received the highest recognition from the American Society of Cinematographers.

I believe David is the only Burro to be nominated and win an Emmy. Google suggests that Sam Greenmun (BHS1986), a graphic/make-up artist, was nominated yet to be confirmed. Nick Brophy (BHS 1983) was nominated and won a Grammy for sound engineering in 2012.

Mark Hoppus (BHS 1990) was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2017. Kaleb Allen (BHS 2010) was nominated for a sound engineer for Best Reggae Album in 2023.
