This is Homecoming Week at Sac State. This Saturday, the unbeaten Sac State Hornets will play the Idaho Vandals. Brock Mather (BHS 2018), a third generation Burroughs football player, will start as linebacker in his eighth game as a Hornet. Fans flying into Sacramento will see a billboard on their way to the stadium. I am thinking that Brock Mather is the only Burro to appear on a billboard on a California highway. This honor for Brock is well deserved, both as a Division I athlete and an accomplished student. Brock had a pick six (interception for a touchdown) against the Eastern Washington University Eagles and was instrumental last week’s come behind overtime win against the Montana Grizzlies. Brock is the son of Todd and Jennifer Mather. As a humorous aside, Long “A” Mather Air Force Base was located near Sacramento. It closed in 1993. But Long “A” Mather is the regional pronunciation of the name. At the first home game in Hornet stadium, the stadium announcer introduced Brock with long “A” Mather. Mom Jennifer was observed striding up the steps to the press box to correct the pronunciation of her son’s name.
