Two weeks into the NCAA Division II softball pre-season, the Rogers State University Hillcats are ranked number one in the Nation by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. The Hillcats are the 2022 NCAA Division II champions, and Samantha (BHS 2019) is a valuable team member as the Hillcats strive for another national championship in 2023. Currently, the Hillcats are 12 – 1.

After graduating from Burroughs, Class of 2019, Samantha played two years at Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC), a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I program. After completing the 2021 season with CNCC, Samantha strategically transferred to an even greater level of play at Bossier Parish Community College, which was nationally ranked among the top 20 junior college softball programs. Samantha graduated from Bossier Parish Community College with an Associate of Arts in Allied Health.

For the 2022 academic year and 2023 softball campaign, Samantha was accepted into the Nyack (New York) College Bachelor’s Degree Nursing program. Samantha was listed on the Nyack softball roster as a catcher and at third base. But in July, just before fully committing to Nyack, Rogers State University coaches Andrea Vaughan and Malori Moss called Samantha offering her a spot on the defending champion’s squad.

“I picked a softball when I was nine and instantly fell in love with the game. I want to play as long as possible and excel in the game. I am proud to be playing at the Division II level. I have wanted to be a nurse for as long as I can remember. Even my Kindergarten “dream board” expressed my dreams of being a nurse. I’ve always wanted to help people and calm tense situations. I believe nursing will give me the best opportunity to do so.” (Samantha Farris)

Samantha has already demonstrated the ability to achieve in a rigorous academic program while accepting the challenges of highly competitive play on the diamond. Samantha’s brother Michael Farris was the 2021 Kelly Award recipient. Samantha is the daughter of Holly (BHS 1995) and Fred (BHS 1994) Farris.
