In Maui, Speaker McCarthy vowed that the people of Hawaii would get the truth on what started the fire, why it grew out of control, why residents weren’t notified faster, and what could be done in the future to prevent this devastation from happening again.

While in Maui, Speaker McCarthy was joined by a bipartisan delegation of Members of Congress, including:

Rep. David Joyce (OH-14), Rep. Jill Tokuda (HI-02), Rep. Russ Fulcher (ID-01), and Rep. Jared Moskowitz (FL-23)

After seeing the resilience of the Lahaina community and meeting many of the federal and local officials who are responsible for the recovery, Speaker McCarthy held a press conference alongside the delegation of Members.

“I think the responsibility as policymakers is: honor those who lost their lives, understand the heritage of the location in which it took place, respect it — but rebuild it, rebuild it in a manner that this can’t [happen again,]” said Speaker McCarthy.
