Nathan Crutchfield (right) of Gateway Elementary School outlasted his peers through 21 rounds of competition to win first place in the annual Sierra Sands Unified School District Spelling Bee! His winning word was “cosmetic.” Pictured with Nathan are SSUSD Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Michelle Savko (left) and Gateway Principal Margaret Bergens. Ryder Johnson of Murray placed second, and Angel Hechanova Mallory of Las Flores took third. Other contenders included Vincent McCourt of Faller, Harlee Latasa of Inyokern, Brandon Reno of Pierce, Roslynn Robertson of Richmond, and Edwin Bush of Monroe.
