Susie Haack left this earth to be with her Lord and Savior on September 29, 2023. Susie was born Margaret “Sue” Edmondson on October 29, 1935, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Lela and Fred Edmondson. She was the second of five children. Susie preferred her middle name and was known to friends and family as Sue or Susie.
When Susie was still a baby, her family moved to Joplin, Missouri, where she grew up. She moved to Victorville, California, 1953 and met U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Marlyn Haack. Marlyn joined the Air Force in 1951 and served in South Korea during the Korean War. After returning to the U.S., he was stationed at George Air Force Base, Victorville, CA. Marlyn and Sue met and married in 1953. They were married 67 years and had a daughter, Debbie, and a son, Larry.
The Haack family moved to Ridgecrest in 1960. In addition to raising a family, Susie worked as a waitress, a bank teller, and a bookkeeper. Marlyn worked for Butler Vending Service, and after 20 years, he and Sue bought and ran the business for many years. Marlyn and Susie were strong Christians and were active members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church for over 60 years.
Susie and Marlyn were both avid Dodger fans and seldom missed a game. They also enjoyed fishing and camping. Susie was a member of the Randsburg Players and performed in many melodrama performances at the Randsburg Opera House. They both sang in the church choir, and Susie enjoyed line dancing.
Susie was preceded in death by her husband, Marlyn. Marlyn died November 4, 2020 during Covid. Her parents, three brothers, and one grandson preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter Debbie Dettman (Dave), son Larry Haack (Becky), seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and her sister Sandy Pryor.
A memorial service will be held for Susie and Marlyn at Grace Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 30, at 11:00. A luncheon reception will follow in the Grace Lutheran Fellowship Hall. Grace Lutheran Church is at 502 North Norma Street, Ridgecrest, (760) 375-9768.
