Sybil Turner

Sybil is survived by her three children: Alan Turner, William Turner (wife Lottie), and Jill Refo.  Sybil was blessed to have twelve grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, nineteen great-great-grandchildren, and two great-great-great-grandchildren.

Sybil was born March 11, 1928, to John and Lavernie Jackson in Seminole, Oklahoma. She was the 2nd oldest of four children. The family moved from Oklahoma to Porterville, California, in the late 1930s. While in high school, she met her future husband, James W. Turner, who was home on leave during World War II. They married on February 23, 1946, and moved to China Lake, California, where James worked for the Navy. By 1953, they had four children and moved off the base to live on 5 acres in the Ridgecrest area. After the children started school, Sybil went to work in the early 1960s at Mary Sue’s Dress and Clothing store in Ridgecrest. The store changed hands in the 1970’s and became Gorrono’s Clothing store. She retired in 1986 to travel around the country with her husband. They made several trips to the East Coast to see family and grandchildren.

She loved being with family and friends, reading, hiking, camping, swimming, and playing card games.  She especially loved her church, Immanuel Baptist Church, which she attended since 1958. She loved working in the nursery with the babies in the early years, singing in the choir, doing bible studies, and leading life groups.  Sybil knew no stranger, she loved the Lord her God with all her soul, might, and strength and loved to share his goodness with everyone.

On Thursday, February 22, 2024, a celebration of life will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church at 11:00 am at 201 Graaf Avenue, Ridgecrest, CA, with the cemetery service immediately following at the Desert Memorial Park Cemetary.  There will be a reception with her favorite tacos following the graveside service at Immanuel Ministry Center at 1201 N. China Lake Blvd.  Family and friends are welcome to come and celebrate Sybil’s life. In place of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Immanuel Christian School in Ridgecrest, CA, in honor of Sybil Fern Turner.
