Two Serious Vehicle Accidents on December 20th

On December 20, 2023, at 8:25 p.m., Kern County firefighters were dispatched to a report of a significant vehicle accident with high-velocity impact in the area of Highway 14 and Redrock Randsburg Road. On their arrival, firefighters found the wreckage of a two-vehicle head-on collision, blocking both lanes of the highway. The incident was named the Desert Incident. Victims were assessed for the severity of their injuries. Sadly, one individual was confirmed deceased. Two other patients were immediately treated for injuries. One of the patients was pinned in their vehicle, requiring extrication. Working in the rain, firefighters used tools and expertise to open up the wreckage to remove the patient safely. While firefighters were searching the area for other victims, a dog was found alive and was tended to by firefighters. The crew cared for the dog, covering it with dry clothes to give it comfort from the rain until animal control officers arrived.


On December 20, 2023, at 7:21 p.m., Kern County firefighters were dispatched to report a 3-vehicle accident at China Lake Blvd. and Highway 395. Upon arrival, fire crews found a semi-truck and two passenger vehicles blocking the intersection. The eyewitnesses reported seeing a car running a stop sign at the S China Lake Blvd 395 intersection, coming into contact with the Southbound semi. The impact sent the semi into oncoming traffic and collided with a northbound SUV. The semi continued over an embankment and came to rest in the desert just south of the China Lake Blvd turnoff—The Kern Co. firefighters and Liberty Ambulance medical personnel treated and cared for three patients on the scene. An elderly woman was taken to RRH by ambulance.
